Silver Hard Hat Awards

The Construction Writers Association Silver Hard Hat Award is the association’s highest honor. The first award was presented in 1969 and its prestige continues today. The Silver Hard Hat Award is awarded to an individual for outstanding contributions in one of two categories, they are:

  • Service to the Construction Industry
  • Service to the Association.

One or both of the awards are considered each year. It is considered at the option of the board of directors. The Silver Hard Hat Award signifies recognition of actions or deeds over an extended period of time.

2008 Walt Moore, Senior Editor of Construction Equipment magazine, for Service to the Industry, and Sheila Wertz, retired Executive Director of CWA, for Service to the Association.

Awards Ceremony

The outstanding winners will be presented Silver Hard Hat Awards at the CWA Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, VA.

Judging Criteria

The CWA Board of Directors makes the final decision on awarding the Silver Hard Hat Awards. The committee serves as the screening group to receive entries and verify their compliance with the prescribed entry rules. No individual is eligible to serve as a juror if they have submitted an entry for that year.

Judges will evaluate entries as follows:

  • Descriptive information submitted with the entry
  • Testamonials submitted with the entry
  • Significant contributions to the construction industry and/or CWA
  • Support information provided in the entry

It is important to include all relevant information with the submittal for the judges to consider when evaluating nominees.

Award Specifications

CWA members and non-members are eligible for this award. Anyone can nominate a person(s) or themselves if they deem to have made significant contributions to the construction industry and/or CWA. The Silver Hard Hat Award signifies recognition of actions or deeds over an extended period of time and not for the specific year only.

Entry Requirements

  • Print and complete a Silver Hard Hat Award nomination form.
  • Send the original nomination form and five copies of all of the information to the designated committee chairperson. See info below for contact name and mailing information.
  • Send a copy of the nomination form to CWA.
  • Entry materials should not be greater than 8.5 x 11 inches in size.
  • All entries become the property of CWA. Entries will not be returned.
  • The winning entries may be retained for archival purposes. CWA may ask permission to reprint the winning articles in its newsletter or place them on its website.

Entry Fee

There is no entry fee for this award.

Deadlines

All entries must be received by March 9, 2009.

The winners will be notified by April 3, 2009.

Your entry must be sent to the committee chairperson. Please send a copy of the nomination form to CWA. See below for the contact information. CWA will confirm receipt of your entry by email. If you do not hear from us, please contact us promptly. Your entry is important to us.
