Construction Writers Association Announces 2006 Journalism and Photography Award Winners

(Buffalo Grove, IL) The finest examples of construction industry journalism and photojournalism from the past year were showcased recently at the Construction Writers Association's Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner in Washington, DC. The awards were presented by Tracie Christie, CWA's Journalism and Photography Awards Chair and a director of the association, who is associate director for awards and marketing of the National Asphalt Pavement Association. The dinner was sponsored by CWA headline sponsor, Caterpillar, Inc.
CWA's oldest journalism honor, the Robert F. Boger Awards, were established in 1975 to recognize feature articles, special reports, and editorials covering issues of current significance to the construction industry. Boger, the former publisher of Engineering News-Record and Construction Methods & Equipment magazines, also played a key role in the founding of CWA.
The 2006 Boger Award for Feature Articles was awarded to Colleen Salomon of the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials for "Delta Dilemma," (view sample PDF) which was published in IAPMO's publication, The Official. An Honorable Mention For Feature Articles went to Larry Stewart of Construction Equipment magazine for "Production Heroes."
The 2006 Boger Award for Special Reports was presented to Jack Roberts, Marcia Gruver, Olivia Grider, and Tom Jackson, all of Equipment World, for their report, "Hot Iron."
The 2006 Boger Award for Editorials was awarded to William Krizan of Engineering News-Record for his editorial, "Building Trades May Be Better Off."
CWA established the T. Randolph Russell Award for Newsletter Excellence in 1993 to honor the former newsletter editor for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.
For the second year in a row, the award was presented to Mark Gudenas, national marketing manager for Swinerton Incorporated, San Francisco, for the employee publication, The Swinerton Quarterly.
The Kneeland Godfrey Award for Body of Work was established in 1999 to recognize individuals showing superior writing and journalistic skills over the course of a year. Godfrey, a CWA past-president, edited Civil Engineering magazine and authored books and newsletters as well.
The 2006 Godfrey Award for Body of Work was presented to Tom Sawyer of Engineering News-Record for his articles, "Talk is Cheap" (view sample PDF), "Nordic Giant" (view sample PDF), and "No Big Easy" (view sample PDF).
CWA established its Photography Awards in 2004 to recognize the increasing importance of photographs as a means of communication and attracting readers to articles. In 2006, the award was named for Gordon B. Wright, a retired editor of Building Design & Construction and a CWA past president who served as the association's meeting photographer for more than a decade.
The 2006 Wright Award for Feature Photograph Technical Merit was presented to Tom Hale of Construction Digest for a photograph of Purdue's Biomedical Engineering Building (see photo here). A Feature Photograph Honorable Mention was awarded to Tom Dodge of Northbrook Publishing for a photo entitled "Leading Edge" (see photo here).
The 2006 Wright Award for a Series of Related Photos was presented to Tom Hale of Construction Digest for photos of the construction of Chicago's Trump Tower (see photo series here).
