Construction Writers Association Announces Events at World of Concrete
December, 2005
Buffalo Grove, IL - The Construction Writers Association has scheduled two CWA events in conjunction with World of Concrete. CWA's second West Coast Meeting, featuring three educational topics, will be held from 2 to 5 pm, Monday, January 16, 2006, in Press Conference Room N251. CWA's annual WOC reception will be in Press Room N250 from 5 to 6:30 pm, Wednesday, January 18, 2006. Both events will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV.
Monday's West Coast Meeting will feature three one-hour sessions: a panel presentation on Project City Center, a $5 billion complex of buildings on the Las Vegas Strip ... Transportation: New Funding, Programs and Projects, presented by the 2006 president of the Institute of Transportation Engineers ... and Latest Trends in Concrete Construction, another panel discussion.
- Project City Center is the largest privately financed project in U.S. history, according to project officials. The 66-acres, 16 million-sq.-ft. City Center will include a Cesar Pelli-designed hotel-casino, two non-gaming hotels, retail shops, dining and entertainment venues, and 1640 luxury condominium units. Set to debut in November 2009, the project has a 40-month construction schedule and will employ 7,000 trades at the peak of activity. Officials from Tishman Construction Corp., the construction manager, Perini Building Co., the general contractor, and Gensler, the architect-of-record, will discuss the logistics and dynamics of this mammoth undertaking.
- The transportation presentation will be made by Richard Romer, a principal of Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Las Vegas, who will serve during 2006 as president of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. He will speak about the new federal transportation legislation, SAFETEA-LU, and its implications, including projects earmarked for Nevada.
- The panelists discussing trends in concrete will include Chuck Merydith, managing director of marketing communications for the Precast Concrete Institute, who will talk about the precast portion of the industry, relying on PCI award-winning projects as the basis of his presentation. Another panelist will be Rich Szecsy, director of technical services, Lattimore Materials Company, McKinney, TX. He will represent ready-mixed concrete and cover topics such as LEEDS, self-consolidating concrete and pervious concrete. Rick Yelton, editor of The Concrete Producer magazine, will serve as moderator.
World of Concrete, including Technology for Construction (formerly called AEC Systems), opens Tuesday, January 17, 2006. WOC show management is helping to sponsor the CWA program by providing meeting space. World of Concrete registration, as well as hotel information, can be found at www.worldofconcrete.com .
