Construction Writers Association Announces 2005 Journalism and Photojournalism Award Winners

July, 2005

(Buffalo Grove, IL) The finest examples of construction industry journalism and photojournalism from the past year were showcased recently at the Construction Writers Association's annual meeting and awards dinner in Washington, DC.

CWA's oldest journalism honor, the Robert F. Boger Awards, were established in 1975 to recognize feature articles, special reports, and editorials covering issues of current significance to the construction industry. Boger, the former publisher of Engineering News-Record and Construction Methods & Equipment magazines, also played a key role in the founding of CWA.

Tom Jackson, editor of Equipment World magazine, won the Boger Award for Feature Articles for "The Road to Retirement," which examined the need for succession planning among small, family-owned construction firms.

The Boger Award for Special Reports was presented to Robert Cassidy, editor in chief; Gordon Wright, executive editor; Larry Flynn, senior editor; and Dave Barista, associate editor, all of Building Design & Construction magazine, for their "Progress Report on Sustainable Development." The report was a supplement to the November 2004 issue of the magazine.

Richard Korman, senior editor of Engineering News-Record, received a Boger Special Report Honorable Mention for "Minutes to Live," a look at safety practices and problems across the construction industry.

The Boger Award for Editorials went to William Krizan, assistant managing editor of Engineering News-Record, for "Paris Airport Collapse Should Not Stifle Innovation," a discussion of the lessons learned from the tragic roof vault collapse at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in May 2004.

CWA established the T. Randolph Russell Award for Newsletter Excellence in 1993 to honor the former newsletter editor for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. This year's award was presented to Mark Gudenas, national marketing manager for Swinerton Incorporated, San Francisco, for the employee publication, The Swinerton Quarterly.

The Kneeland Godfrey Award for Body of Work was established in 1999 to recognize individuals showing superior writing and journalistic skills over the course of a year. Godfrey, a CWA past-president, edited Civil Engineering magazine and authored books and newsletters as well. The 2005 award went to Timothy Grogan, senior business and economics editor of Engineering News-Record, for his series of articles covering the skyrocketing price of steel.

Sharon O'Malley, a writer with Washington, DC-based Hanley Wood, received a Godfrey Honorable Mention for her articles on new housing industry ventilation standards, zero-energy housing, and the use of PVC products in homebuilding. The articles were published in Building Products magazine.

CWA established its Photojournalism Awards in 2004 to recognize the increasing importance of photographs as a means of communication and attracting readers to articles.

The 2005 Photojournalism Award for Feature Photograph went to Jim Jobes, public relations director for Industrial Marketing Services, Des Plaines, Ill., for his photograph of the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Chicago's Millennium Park. Jobes' photo was published in five magazines covering the construction and aerial work platform industries.

Steve Hudson, editor of Dixie Contractor magazine, won the 2005 Photojournalism Award for Series of Related Photographs with "Have Mats, Will Travel," which helps guide readers through the process of dealing with unstable site conditions.
