Construction Writers Association Plans West Coast Regional Meeting
Buffalo Grove, IL - The Construction Writers Association (CWA) will conduct its first West Coast program at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Monday, January 17, the day before the 2005 World of Concrete show opening. Scheduled for 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the convention center press conference room, the meeting will feature presentations on speechwriting and two major infrastructure projects:
- Southern Nevada Water Authority will spend $2.2 billion on its capital improvement project. Bill Buchholz, program manager for Parsons, will lead a discussion covering issues such as managing a huge project in a fast-growing city, the implications of constructing new facilities in the face of a severe drought, and regional water issues.
- A new bypass bridge is being constructed to take road traffic off Hoover Dam. The new bridge will be the largest single span concrete bridge in North America when finished. Dave Zanetell, manager of the Hoover Dam Bypass project for the Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and chief of project management for the CFLHD of the FHWA, will lead the discussion.
- For a change of pace, Ed Rehfeld of the Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust (LECET) will discuss the fundamentals of speechwriting. This is a reprise of Rehfeld's well-received presentation given during the CWA 2004 Annual Meeting. Ed has served as a speechwriter for major labor and religious leaders, a Maryland cabinet official, and Maryland gubernatorial candidate Parris Glendening.
World of Concrete, including Technology for Construction (formerly called AEC Systems), opens Tuesday, January 18, 2005. WOC show management is helping to sponsor the CWA program by providing meeting space. World of Concrete registration as well as hotel information can be found at www.worldofconcrete.com.
The West Coast program is in addition to CWA's annual World of Concrete reception, which will be held Wednesday, January 19 in the press room, N250. Information on the CWA West Coast Meeting, including a meeting registration form, will be posted (and updated) on CWA's website, www.constructionwriters.org. Registration is required. Members will pay $10 to attend, and non-members will pay $25. Special offer: Nonmembers may join CWA for $100 and attend the meeting for free.
