CWA HONORS SILVER HARD HAT AND JOURNALISM AWARD WINNERS

May, 2003

(Buffalo Grove, IL) -- The Construction Writers Association's highest honor, the Silver Hard Hat Award, and its prestigious Journalism Awards were presented at the organization's awards dinner Thursday, May 1, 2003. CWA 2002-3 President Dennis Day, senior director of public affairs for Associated General Contractors of America, Alexandria, VA, served as master of ceremonies for the event.

Silver Hard Hat Award
The Silver Hard Hat Award was presented to Gordon Wright, past president of CWA and executive editor of Building Design & Construction (and a 30-year veteran with his magazine), for his continuing commitment to CWA and for being such a respected member of the construction trade press. Day, who nominated him, detailed Wright's involvement with CWA, including helping to found the CWA Chicago Chapter, serving as program chairman for Chicago meetings, photographing CWA meetings, and serving on the board. He also pointed to Gordon's length of service at a publication in the construction industry, the respect he commands in the industry, and what his editor calls "more than a million brilliant words." Day assisted Tom Kuennen, principal of Expressways Publishing Project, Wheeling, IL, and Silver Hard Hat chairman, in the presentation.

Journalism Awards
CWA Journalism Awards were presented by awards co-chair Tracie Christie, associate director of awards and marketing for the National Asphalt Pavement Association, Lanham, MD. Journalism Awards chair Sharon Holling, marketing administrator for trade public relations at Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL, was unable to attend the dinner.

The Boger Awards for editorial excellence and achievement in construction journalism were established in 1975. They honor the late Robert F.
