CONSTRUCTION WRITERS ASSOCIATION TO HOLD 44th ANNUAL MEETING IN WASHINGTON, DC

The Construction Writers Association (CWA) will hold its 44nd annual meeting May 2-3, 2002, in Washington, D.C. Thursday, May 2 will start with a "Fundamentals of Construction Writing" education session, which will be followed by a tour the new Botanic Gardens on the U. S. Capitol grounds and conclude with a gala awards dinner. Friday, May 3 will feature CWA's traditional annual meeting program with speakers from government agencies, an economic forecast, and a special presentation on the World Trade Center collapse.

The details were announced by meeting chairman Dennis Day of Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) who is also CWA's vice president.

At the National Press Club on Friday, attendees will hear presentations from some of Washington's movers and shakers including speakers from among these invited organizations: Federal Emergency Management Administration, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, Department of Labor, National Labor Relations Board, Army Corps of Engineers, Small Business Administration and The Infrastructure Security Partnership. An update of the nation�s and the construction industry's economic outlook will be presented by AGC�s new chief economist, Ken Simonson. Following an exclusive video presentation, attendees will attend a luncheon featuring an update on the WTC and the events surrounding 9/11. Finally, CWA will elect its 2002-03 officers.

Thursday's "Fundamentals of Construction Writing" program, scheduled from 8 to 11 am at the National Press Club, will feature three sessions: "How to Write Snappy Stories About Construction" will be presented by Matthew Power, senior editor of Builder magazine and a former journalism instructor, who will cover crafting stories, captions and headlines, copyediting, article organization, and more. Jan Tuchman, editor in chief of Engineering News-Record and current president of CWA, will provide personal critiques of students' writing samples and present a session on the common problems she found. Tom Sawyer, information technology editor of Engineering News-Record and previously a photography instructor, will present "Demystifying Digital Photography," including how to buy a digital camera, how to use it, and how to make effective use of digital photography in publications. A limited number of students will be accepted, and there will be a separate registration fee ($100 for CWA members, $125 for nonmembers) for this session. Proceeds from the course will be set aside to establish a CWA scholarship fund.

On Thursday afternoon, members have been invited to a special tour of the U.S. Botanic Gardens on the mall near the Capitol Building. CWA officers and directors also will meet on Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday evening, CWA will hold its annual journalism award dinner at The City Club. Awards to be presented include CWA's highest honor, the Silver Hard Hat Award, which is given for contributions to the construction industry and/or to the association. CWA will also award its annual journalism awards, the Robert F. Boger Award for editorial excellence and achievement, the T. Randolph Russell Award for outstanding newsletter, and the Kneeland Godfrey Award for body of work. Finally, CWA will recognize emerging technology with its journalism website awards.

A limited number of rooms are available at the hotel for $191 per night. The cutoff for making reservations at the CWA rate is April 9, 2002.

Hotel Washington is within walking distance of both meeting sites. The City Club is located at 555 13th St NW, and the National Press Club is at 14th & F Streets.

Registration for the annual meeting is $95 for members and $120 for nonmembers; add $25 if registering after April 22. Combined registration for the Thursday education session and the annual meeting will be $190 for members and $215 for nonmembers.
