CWA Schedules Midyear Meeting

August, 2001

Chicago's Wacker Drive reconstruction project and promotion techniques for individuals and organizations are the two major topics scheduled for the Construction Writers Association's midyear meeting, scheduled for October 5, 2001, in downtown Chicago. The association's first annual marketing communications awards will be presented during an awards luncheon. The education session and awards luncheon will occur from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Tower Club, on the 39th floor at 20 N. Wacker Drive (the Civic Opera Building).

S. L. Kaderbek, SE, PE, deputy commissioner and chief engineer, and Denise M. Casalino, PE, project manager for Wacker Drive construction management, both of the City of Chicago Department of Transportation, will discuss renovation of the double-deck drive, which is located along the Chicago River. The project is occurring on the east-west portion of Wacker approximately two blocks north of the meeting site. Those who wish to tour the Wacker Drive project can do so after lunch. The tour will begin at the Chicago DOT offices, 30 N. LaSalle. The city will provide hard hats for the on-site portion of the tour.

Jan Tuchman, editor in chief of Engineering News-Record and current president of CWA will serve as moderator for the panel: Karen Courtney, director of marketing, NBBJ, Seattle, WA, who will discuss marketing from the perspective of an in-house practitioner; David Wood, a freelancer and marketing consultant, from Deering, NH , who will cover marketing from the perspective of an outside practitioner and "shameless self-promotion"; Francine Murphy, a public relations consultant from San Diego, CA, who will offer dos and don'ts of being interviewed; and Ron Worth, executive vice president of the Society for Marketing Professional Services, Alexandria, VA, who will discuss marketing from the perspective of an association.

CWA's first annual marketing communications awards will be presented during the Friday luncheon. The association received several dozen entries in three basic categories - advertising, corporate communications, and public relations. The awards will be presented by David Wood, chair of the awards committee and a past president of CWA.

Members of CWA's Board of Directors will meet from 3 to 5 pm on Thursday, October 4, at the McGraw-Hill offices in One Prudential Plaza, Chicago. Members are welcome to observe the meeting and join in an informal dinner afterwards.
