Journalism Awards Presented at CWA Annual Meeting

June, 2001

The Construction Writers Association's journalism, website, and service awards were presented during the association's 2001 annual meeting, held this May in Washington, DC.

The association's highest honor, the Silver Hard Hat Award, was presented to Jack Miller of the Jack Miller Network, Houston, TX, for service to the industry. Miller began his career as a laborer in 1949 and earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Washington State University in 1958. After a varied career in sales, marketing, and management, he founded Group Communications Inc. in 1969 to provide industry professionals with information on marketing, design/build/lease/finance, and total quality management. In 1987, he founded The Jack Miller Network, which today includes nearly 600 contractor members. He has written 17 books about construction, business management, and more.

The Robert F. Boger Awards were established in 1971 to honor Boger, a founder of CWA and the late publisher of McGraw-Hill's Engineering News-Record and Construction Methods & Equipment. The Boger award for feature articles was presented to Richard A. Korman for "Unbelievable Receivables," a cover story in Engineering News-Record. The Boger award for special reports went to David Rosenbaum for "Education for Careers in Construction," published in ENR. The Boger award for editorials was awarded to Bill Wilson for "What to Wear," which appeared in Roads & Bridges.

The T. Randolph Russell Award was established in 1993 to honor the late "Randy" Russell, who edited a weekly newsletter for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). This year's Russell award was presented to Alison Carrara of FMI Corporation for the newsletter Job Site Supervisor.

Established in 1999, the Kneeland "Ned" Godfrey award honors a past CWA president who served in top editorial posts with Civil Engineering and IOMA and authored a construction-related book for McGraw-Hill prior to his death in 1997. This year's Godfrey award was given to William G. Krizan for articles appearing in Engineering News-Record.

The CWA website awards, established in 1998, are awarded in two categories - initial investment under $50,000 and initial investment over $50,000. This year's winner in the under $50,000 investment category is Tim Carter of Askthebuilder.com. This year's winner in the over $50,000 investment category is Housingzone.com, which is sponsored by Cahners.

CWA journalism awards are given to individual authors or editors, not the publications or organizations that published the material. The website awards, on the other hand, are seen as a joint venture and therefore presented to the organizations sponsoring the winning site.
