Boger Feature Article Award winners

The Robert F. Boger - Feature Article award recognizes well-written articles of current significance to the construction industry. In this highly competitive category, judges awarded a Winner and three Honorable Mentions.

Larry Stewart, executive editor of Construction Equipment was the Winner. His article "Industry Moves to Stem the Theft Tide" reported on some of the risk-management strategies and technologies that some companies use to reduce theft.

Honorable Mentions went to: Richard Korman, senior business writer for ENR, for his report "Barnyard Conditions;" Joanna Masterson, senior writer, for her piece in Construction Executive, "At Work Against Discrimination;" and to Carl Molesworth, editor of Pacific Builder & Engineer, for his two-part article "Rock for the Columbia Jetty" and "Columbia Jetty Repairs."

Boger Special Report Award winners

In the Robert F. Boger -- Special Reports category judges evaluated entries for interpretive skills on a subject relevant to its publication's readers. One winner and one honorable mention were awarded.

The Winners were Tom Jackson, Marcia Gruver, and Rachel Telehany of Equipment World for their special report, "Crew Shift." This exhaustive look at the impact of Hispanics on the construction workforce included 10 separate articles discussing day workers, impact on businesses, opposing immigration views, legal aspects, etc.

The Honorable Mention award went to Robert Cassidy, David Barista, Jay Schneider and Jeff Yoders of Building Design & Construction (BD&C) for its 64-page special report on "Green Buildings and the Bottom Line."

Boger Editorial Writing Award winners

The Robert F. Boger - Editorial Writing award rewards high-impact editorials that reflect the editorial policy of the publication.

The Winner for Editorial Writing was ENR's Managing Editor William Krizan who penned the winning editorial - "Project Owners with Few Bidders May be Stinky Clients." This editorial pointed out that many owners were to blame for the rising bid prices from fewer bidders. By being overly demanding and imposing questionable contractual terms - "stinky owners have stinky projects."

An Honorable Mention went to Bill Wilson, editorial director of Roads & Bridges for "Step on It."

Randolph Newsletter Award winners

The T. Randolph Russell Newsletter award recognizes outstanding industry newsletters. The judges awarded a Winner and an Honorable Mention.

The Winner was Larry Riney of Riney Marketing Communications for John Deere's InFocus newsletter. The breezy and informative newsletter is directed towards John Deere's construction and forestry industry clients.

An Honorable Mention went to Marianna Boucher from McKim & Creed's corporate communications department for its newsletter.

Godfrey Award winners

The Godfrey Body of Work Award recognizes individuals showing superior writing and journalistic skills over the course of a year. Journalists are asked to submit three examples of their work. One Winner and three Honorable Mentions were awarded.

The Winner was BD&C Associate Editor Jeff Yoders. He researched 30 years of semiconductor technology for his feature, "A Brighter Future for LEDs," giving readers a perspective of where LED's came from and where the technology is going. His second article, "School Design that's not by the Book," identified the key K-12 financing, design and construction trends. Finally, "Downsizing Lab Energy Systems" presented study findings that showed the lack of efficiency in the design of laboratory spaces and outlined better ways to do it. In all three cases, readers take away a better understanding of what they need to do to take advantage of changes and trends.

Honorable Mention awards went to Walt Moore, senior writer for Construction Equipment; BD&C Senior Editor Jay Schneider; and New York Construction's editor Tom Stabile.

Wright Photograph Award winners

The Gordon B. Wright Photography awards were designed to honor photography of construction related subjects that add to the elements of the story as either a feature photograph or as a series.

The Winner for Feature Photography is "Twists and Turns" by Michael Goodman. This cover for ENR showcased steelworkers constructing one of the venues for the Beijing Olympics. Jurors found the graphically strong image compelling and a metaphor for the emergence of China as a world power while suggesting the ongoing oppression of the common worker.

Goodman's work continued to impress the judges as his "Driven Dubai" entry also captured the award for a Series of Photographs. The cover photograph, again for ENR, together with multiple photographs accompanying the lead story, told the story in pictures of the frantic and complex building activity that is reshaping the country of Dubai. The artistic interpretation of building materials and projects, from various perspectives, left the jury feeling like they'd had a quick trip to the other side of the world by viewing this work.
